Expanding breast cancer screening in rural Texas

Why It Matters

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S. and the second leading cause of cancer-related death. Early detection saves lives—but not everyone has equal access to screening.

In rural Texas, many women face serious challenges when it comes to getting screened:

  • Few local healthcare providers
  • Long travel distances
  • Time away from work
  • Lack of culturally sensitive care
  • No screening options for younger women

As a result, breast cancer is often diagnosed at later stages, leading to poorer outcomes, unnecessary suffering, death and financial strain on families.

Our Response

The Access to Breast Health for Texans (ABHT) initiative was created by the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health and the Bexa Equity Alliance (BEA) to bridge these gaps. The program brings breast screening directly to rural communities at trusted locations close to home.

We use the Bexa process- two radiation-free, FDA cleared technologies; the Bexa scan and targeted ultrasound, when indicated. By combining an elastographic device with ultrasound imaging, masses are detected and then imaged with ultrasound that is interpreted by a breast radiologist. The Bexa and ultrasound technologies are small and portable and do not use radiation or compression, making the process comfortable, easily transportable and accessible. The Bexa™ technology is unaffected by dense breast tissue or implants, safe during pregnancy and effective in younger or breast-feeding women. The entire process for a Bexa Breast screening takes 15 to 30 minutes.

We eliminate a longstanding barrier to adoption by identifying comfortable and convenient places to perform exams in local settings like:

More convenience and simple on-line appointments that do not require a prescription, and efficacy in all women, mean more adoption than has ever been achieved in this community of women.

How It Works
